I Dealt With Southern Kaduna Leaders; I Don't Tolerate Nonsense — El-Rufai
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that some Southern Kaduna Christians perceived him as a "fundamentalist" because he confronted them during his tenure and refused to tolerate what he described as their sense of entitlement.
Speaking on Sunday Politics August 31, El-Rufai dismissed allegations of religious bias in his leadership.
"They can think what they think. I don't tolerate nonsense; governance is not a joke. When you're governing 10 million people as I did in Kaduna, you must discriminate between A and B. Nobody can blackmail me that because he is a Christian, the law doesn't apply to him," he said.
The former governor likened his handling of Southern Kaduna leaders to his clampdown on the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) led by Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
"There are people in Southern Kaduna that feel entitled to behave in a certain way, I dealt with them. Just like El-Zakzaky's people who thought they could do what they want and get away with it, I dealt with them too. They are Muslims like me, but I don't take any nonsense," he added.
El-Rufai also claimed he ended certain privileges enjoyed by Southern Kaduna elites and other groups, citing misuse of state funds.
"There are some entitled Southern Kaduna leaders who were used to getting money from government every month. They were used to receiving $20,000 every month for medical check-ups, so I stopped it. Just as I stopped sponsoring pilgrimage and other things I felt were a waste of government resources," he stated.
