FG Convenes Emergency Meeting, Invites EFCC, DSS, Police to End LPG Hoarding, Diversion
The Federal Government has convened an emergency stakeholders' meeting with key security and regulatory agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and major players in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sector, to tackle the growing challenges of hoarding, diversion, and artificial scarcity of cooking gas across the country.
The meeting was called in response to rising complaints from consumers and marketers over the illegal diversion of LPG supplies, which has contributed to price hikes and shortages in several states. Government officials expressed concern that the activities of unscrupulous individuals and cartels are undermining efforts to make clean cooking energy affordable and accessible to Nigerians.
During the meeting, participants resolved to strengthen surveillance across LPG distribution channels, identify and prosecute offenders, and improve collaboration among security agencies and industry regulators. The EFCC, DSS, and the Police pledged to intensify investigations into suspected cases of hoarding and illegal diversion, while marketers were urged to comply with existing regulations and maintain transparent supply chains.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers, stabilizing LPG prices, and ensuring uninterrupted nationwide distribution. It also warned that anyone found engaging in practices that create artificial scarcity or exploit consumers would face the full weight of the law.
