Dangote Files Fresh Lawsuit Against FG Over Fuel Import Licences
Africaâs richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, has launched a fresh legal battle against the Federal Government over the continued issuance of fuel import licences to oil marketers and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC).
According to court filings at the Federal High Court in Lagos, the Dangote Group refinery is seeking to nullify import permits granted or renewed by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). The refinery argued that the approvals violate an earlier court order and undermine local refining operations.
The new lawsuit comes months after the refinery withdrew a previous N100 billion case against regulators and fuel importers. Dangote Refinery insists that Nigeria should reduce dependence on imported petroleum products now that local refining capacity has significantly improved.
Industry regulators and marketers, however, maintain that fuel imports remain necessary to guarantee stable supply and prevent shortages across the country while domestic production continues to ramp up.
The dispute highlights the growing tension in Nigeriaâs downstream oil sector over market competition, fuel pricing, and control of supply channels following the commencement of operations at the multi-billion-dollar Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos.
