Trump Accuses Nigerian Government of Failing Christians, Calls Situation ‘Genocide’
United States President Donald Trump has sharply criticized the Nigerian government over the ongoing killings of Christians in the country, describing the situation as a “genocide.”
Speaking on a conservative radio programme on Friday — comments later highlighted by Fox News — Trump claimed that thousands of Christians were being killed across Nigeria and accused the government of failing to address extremist violence.
“Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace,” Trump said. “They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide, and I’m really angry about it.”
Trump reiterated his administration’s previous designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to alleged religious persecution. He also warned that the United States could halt financial aid to Nigeria if the government does not take stronger action against Islamist militant groups.
“We give a lot of subsidies to Nigeria. We’re going to end up stopping,” he added, further emphasizing that military intervention could be considered if the protection of Christian communities does not improve.
The remarks come amid growing international attention on the persistent security challenges in Nigeria, where terrorist attacks, banditry, and communal violence have repeatedly claimed lives, particularly in the country’s northern and central regions.
