Presidency, CAN Clash Over Christian Genocide Allegation in Nigeria
A heated exchange has erupted between the Presidency and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over recent allegations by CAN that the country is witnessing a âsystematic genocideâ against Christians.
CAN, in a strongly worded statement, accused the federal government of turning a blind eye to what it described as âtargeted killings, abductions, and persecutionâ of Christians in northern and central Nigeria. The association cited repeated attacks on churches, clergy, and Christian communities, urging the international community to intervene.
Reacting, the Presidency dismissed CANâs claims as âfalse, divisive, and politically motivated.â Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale said the government remains committed to protecting all citizens regardless of religion, adding that security agencies have intensified operations against all forms of terrorism.
Ngelale emphasized that the narrative of religious persecution was being weaponized by âcertain groupsâ to undermine national unity, while calling on religious leaders to promote peace rather than âstoke fear and mistrust.â
CAN, however, maintained its stance, insisting that evidence from across several states points to a deliberate pattern of violence targeting Christians. The body called for transparent investigations, stronger community protection, and justice for victims.
Observers warn that the growing rift between the Presidency and CAN could inflame religious tensions unless both sides adopt conciliatory dialogue to address mutual concerns about security and religious freedom.
