FG Backs Defence Headquarters as Coup Rumour Sparks Political Firestorm

The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) following widespread coup rumours that have ignited heated political debates nationwide. The government dismissed the reports as “baseless and mischievous,” warning that such narratives could destabilize the nation’s democracy.

Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said in Abuja on Sunday that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has full confidence in the military’s loyalty and professionalism. He cautioned politicians and social media users against spreading falsehoods capable of inciting unrest.

Meanwhile, opposition figures and civil society groups have demanded transparency over recent military arrests, urging the government to respect due process. The DHQ reaffirmed its allegiance to the constitution, describing the rumours as attempts by detractors to sow discord between the military and the civilian government.

Security analysts, however, warned that the situation underscores the growing tension within the polity, fueled by economic hardship and political polarization.
