Amupitan Faces Tough Test as New INEC Chairman
Detailed News:
Barely days after his appointment by President Bola Tinubu, newly confirmed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Abdullahi Amupitan, faces mounting challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers note that Amupitanâs tenure begins at a critical time when public trust in the electoral process remains fragile.
Stakeholders have urged the new INEC boss to prioritize electoral transparency, technology upgrades, and security of election materials. Civil society groups are also pressing for early preparations to avoid logistical lapses seen in past elections.
Amupitan, a former university don and policy expert, replaces Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who resigned earlier this month. His leadership will be tested by the need to deliver credible off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo states before the nationwide polls in 2027.
Political analysts say Amupitanâs success will depend on his ability to work independently, despite pressures from political actors and interest groups.
