Tax Reform: We’re Doing Surgery, It Will Come With Some Pain – Taiwo Oyedele
Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has described Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms as a “surgical operation” that may involve short-term pain but is necessary to fix deep-rooted structural problems in the economy.
Oyedele said the reforms are aimed at simplifying the tax system, removing multiple taxation, and creating a fairer environment for businesses and individuals. According to him, Nigeria’s tax framework has for years been burdened by inefficiencies, overlaps, and policies that discourage investment and economic growth.
He explained that while some Nigerians may initially feel the impact of changes such as the removal of certain exemptions or stricter compliance measures, the long-term benefits will outweigh the discomfort. These benefits include a broader tax base, lower pressure on honest taxpayers, improved revenue generation, and better funding for public services.
Oyedele stressed that the reform agenda is not about increasing taxes indiscriminately but about ensuring equity, transparency, and efficiency. He noted that the government is prioritising dialogue with stakeholders, including the private sector and subnational governments, to ensure smooth implementation.
The tax reform chairman added that a successful overhaul would help Nigeria reduce its reliance on borrowing, strengthen fiscal stability, and support sustainable economic growth, urging citizens to be patient and see the reforms as a necessary step toward long-term national prosperity.
