Presidency Rejects World Bank’s Poverty Report, Labels It Misleading and Inaccurate
The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed the recent World Bank report which claimed that over 100 million Nigerians live in poverty, describing the findings as “inaccurate, outdated, and not reflective of current realities.” In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the government said the report failed to consider recent economic reforms and social investment initiatives introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Onanuga emphasized that while the government acknowledges the economic challenges caused by subsidy removal and currency unification, the data used by the World Bank was based on pre-reform figures. He added that the administration has rolled out various intervention programs — including the conditional cash transfer and agricultural support schemes — to mitigate hardship and stimulate growth.
“The Nigerian government remains committed to reducing poverty through sustainable policies, infrastructural investment, and human capital development,” Onanuga stated. He urged international institutions to engage more closely with local agencies such as the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to obtain reliable and updated data.
The Presidency further assured Nigerians that ongoing reforms will soon yield positive outcomes, calling for patience and support as the country transitions toward a more productive economy.
