CAF Introduces VAR for 2026 WCQ Playoffs Ahead of Nigeria vs Gabon Clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the upcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifier playoffs, beginning with the much-anticipated Nigeria versus Gabon encounter.

According to CAF, the decision aims to ensure transparency, fairness, and accuracy in officiating during the crucial qualification phase. The Nigeria-Gabon playoff, scheduled to hold at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, will mark one of the first fixtures in which VAR will be deployed across Africa’s World Cup qualifiers.

CAF officials stated that match referees and assistants from across the continent have undergone intensive training to operate the technology effectively. This move follows complaints over poor officiating in previous qualifiers, prompting CAF to align with FIFA standards ahead of the 2026 tournament jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Nigerian fans have welcomed the development, hoping VAR will curb controversial decisions that have often marred key matches. Both teams are expected to arrive at their training camps later this week as anticipation builds for the decisive encounter.
