2026 World Cup Qualifier: Osimhen Leads Star-Studded Super Eagles Squad
Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup received a major boost as head coach Finidi George unveiled a formidable 25-man Super Eagles squad led by Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. The list, released ahead of the crucial qualifiers later this month, features a mix of experienced internationals and in-form youngsters from Europe’s top leagues.
Osimhen, who has been in fine scoring form for Napoli, headlines a potent attacking lineup that includes Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, and Taiwo Awoniyi. The return of Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze adds creativity to the midfield, while Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka bring stability and defensive strength.
In defence, William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey retain their places, joined by Zaidu Sanusi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Semi Ajayi. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who impressed during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, will compete with Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleye for the number-one spot.
Coach Finidi expressed optimism about the team’s chances, emphasizing unity and discipline. “We have a strong squad capable of delivering results. Every game counts, and our goal is to secure early qualification,” he said.
Nigeria currently sits second in Group C, behind South Africa, with upcoming matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda crucial to their qualification campaign. The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded 48-team format — increasing Nigeria’s chances but also heightening competition across Africa.
