Senate: We’ll Deliver State Police by Year End

The Nigerian Senate has assured Nigerians that the long-awaited creation of state police will be achieved before the end of the year as part of ongoing constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening security across the country.

Speaking during a legislative session at the National Assembly Complex, Senate leaders said the upper chamber is working closely with the House of Representatives and state governments to finalize the constitutional amendment that will allow individual states to establish and manage their own police forces.

According to lawmakers, the move is intended to address the growing security challenges facing the country, including banditry, kidnapping, and communal conflicts. Senators argued that centralized policing under the Nigeria Police Force has overstretched federal resources, making it difficult to respond quickly to local security threats.

The proposal for state policing has been widely debated for years, with supporters saying it will improve intelligence gathering and allow quicker responses to crime at the grassroots level. However, critics warn that state police could be misused by governors for political purposes if proper safeguards are not implemented.

The Senate leadership emphasized that the reform will include strict operational guidelines, oversight mechanisms, and cooperation between federal and state security agencies to prevent abuse.

Security experts and civil society groups have continued to call for reforms in Nigeria’s policing structure, insisting that decentralizing law enforcement could significantly improve public safety.

If passed, the constitutional amendment would mark one of the most significant security reforms in Nigeria’s democratic history, potentially reshaping the country’s approach to internal security.
