Outrage Over Police Crackdown On Lagos Anti-Demolition Protesters
Public anger has continued to mount following the dispersal of anti-demolition protesters by police officers in Lagos. The protesters, drawn from several affected communities, had marched peacefully to the Lagos State House of Assembly to demand an end to forced evictions, compensation for demolished homes, and proper resettlement plans.
Eyewitnesses said security operatives blocked access to the Assembly complex and fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, causing panic and injuries among demonstrators. Some journalists covering the protest were also reportedly affected by the action, sparking condemnation from media and civil society groups.
Human rights organisations and activists described the crackdown as a violation of citizensâ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and expression. They accused authorities of using force instead of engaging protesters through dialogue. Groups also demanded the immediate release of arrested protest leaders and accountability for officers involved in the operation.
The Lagos State Police Command, however, defended its actions, claiming the protest disrupted traffic and posed security risks. Police authorities stated that those arrested would be charged in court in line with the law.
The incident has renewed debate over urban redevelopment policies in Lagos, with many Nigerians calling on the state government to adopt more humane approaches to demolitions, including compensation, resettlement, and stakeholder engagement to avoid further social unrest.
