Nigeria Re-Elected to IMO Council After 14 Years, Tinubu Hails Boost in Global Maritime Influence
President Bola Tinubu has hailed Nigeria’s re-election into the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the 2026–2027 biennium, describing it as a powerful endorsement of the country’s expanding maritime profile and constructive engagement in global shipping governance.
Nigeria secured its place in Category C of the IMO Council on Friday, November 28, during the organisation’s General Assembly in London. This marks the nation’s return to the council after a 14-year absence.
In a statement released on Saturday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu noted that the victory underlines the international community’s confidence in Nigeria’s commitment to maritime safety, security, environmental protection, and adherence to rules-based operations.
He added that the re-election strengthens Nigeria’s voice in shaping global maritime policies and reinforces ongoing efforts to enhance the nation’s shipping industry, blue economy potential, and international cooperation.
The President further commended the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and Nigeria’s diplomatic team for their role in securing the country’s successful return to the IMO Council.
