Nigeria TV Info — Presidency Reacts to Jonathan’s 2027 Presidential Ambition

Abuja, Nigeria — The Presidency on Monday acknowledged the right of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election but criticised his tenure for lacking a clear economic agenda, engaging in frivolous spending, running the economy aground, and plunging the nation into economic distress.

The statement was issued in response to remarks by former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, that Jonathan would run for president in 2027 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a 15-paragraph statement signed by the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said Jonathan was welcome to face President Bola Tinubu at the polls, but warned him to be cautious of “PDP sugar-coated cheerleaders” who, it said, sought to lure him into the race to serve personal, religious, ethnic, and political interests.

The statement faulted Jonathan’s ambition, arguing that the Tinubu administration had spent the last 28 months correcting the missteps of the Jonathan era. According to the Presidency, these corrections included resetting the economy, removing the fuel subsidy, and abolishing multiple exchange rates — policies which, it argued, had halted ruinous economic practices and stopped arbitrage.
