Nigeria TV Info Reports: FG Embarks on Strategic Tour of Kaduna Textile Hubs to Revive Cotton and Garment Industry

Kaduna, Nigeria | Nigeria TV Info — In a decisive move to breathe new life into Nigeria’s once-thriving textile sector, the Federal Government has embarked on a comprehensive tour of key textile hubs in Kaduna State. The tour aims to identify practical ways of reviving the cotton, textile, and garment (CTG) industry—an essential component of the country’s industrial growth and employment generation strategy.

The inspection exercise, which kicked off with visits to the United Nigerian Textiles Limited (UNTL) and Chellco Industries, was led by the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh. He was accompanied by the Managing Director of the Bank of Industry (BOI), Dr. Olasupo Olusi, along with senior officials and stakeholders in the manufacturing sector.

This initiative, Nigeria TV Info gathered, forms part of the federal government’s broader economic revival agenda to rejuvenate local industries, stimulate employment, and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported textiles. The tour is designed to assess firsthand the current conditions of the industry and gather insights on how government support can be effectively channeled.

During the visit to UNTL—one of the country’s pioneer textile manufacturing giants—the delegation was received by His Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the company. The Emir highlighted the impact of economic instability on the factory, noting its closure in 2022 after decades of operations that once employed more than 10,000 Nigerians.

“The fall of UNTL is not only the story of a single company, but also a mirror of the broader decline in Nigeria’s manufacturing strength. The revival of this sector is critical, not just for Kaduna, but for the entire nation,” Sanusi stated.

The FG delegation also made a stop at Chellco Industries, one of the few textile manufacturers in Kaduna that have survived the industry’s turbulent decades. Established in 1980, Chellco has remained in continuous operation, maintaining a workforce of over 290 employees.
