“Submit to Investigation, Adeyanju Tells El‑Rufai” — Activist Rejects Arrest Claims, Demands Probe

Civil rights lawyer and human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has publicly challenged former Nasir El‑Rufai to submit himself to investigation, insisting the former governor’s claim of unlawful targeting at Abuja’s airport was exaggerated. Adeyanju spoke during an interview on ARISE News on Friday, where he dismissed El‑Rufai’s account of a planned arrest by security operatives upon his return from Egypt.

Adeyanju described El‑Rufai as prone to political theatrics and said there was no clear evidence of a planned arrest, suggesting the security operatives may have been acting within legal parameters, such as seizing his passport under watch‑list procedures. He argued that lawful arrest in Nigeria requires probable cause or a warrant and that any unlawful detention would be unconstitutional.

While emphasising that all citizens deserve due process, Adeyanju noted that El‑Rufai himself has acknowledged ongoing scrutiny by anti‑corruption agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. He challenged the former governor to cooperate fully with these investigations rather than framing the situation as persecution.

Adeyanju criticised what he called double standards, pointing to past actions against critics during El‑Rufai’s tenure and stressed that accountability and investigations don’t imply guilt but are essential for the rule of law.

In response to the airport incident, El‑Rufai has stated that he will honour an invitation to appear before the ICPC on February 18, 2026.
