Nigerian Troops Held in Burkina Faso After ‘Unfriendly’ Emergency Landing
Burkina Faso authorities have reportedly detained a contingent of Nigerian soldiers after their military aircraft made an “unfriendly and unauthorized” emergency landing in Ouagadougou late Tuesday, escalating diplomatic tension between the two West African nations.
According to security sources, the aircraft—believed to be transporting Nigerian troops on a classified mission—requested emergency clearance due to technical issues but allegedly failed to follow proper communication protocols before landing. Burkina Faso’s military government immediately took custody of the personnel, citing “airspace breach and unexplained military movement.”
Nigerian defence officials confirmed the incident, stressing that the aircraft did not intend to violate Burkina Faso's sovereignty. They said the emergency landing was necessitated by engine failure and insisted that the troops should be released without delay.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions, especially following Nigeria’s recent security responses and shifting alliances within the Sahel region. Diplomatic engagements between Abuja and Ouagadougou are now underway to secure the safe return of the detained soldiers.
Burkina Faso’s military leadership has not stated when the troops will be released but emphasized that investigations are ongoing. Analysts warn that the situation, if not swiftly resolved, could strain already fragile relations between ECOWAS states and the Sahel bloc.
