HBO to Release Documentary on Wizkid’s Rise to Global Stardom

HBO is set to premiere a compelling new documentary, Music Box: Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, chronicling the extraordinary journey of Nigerian music superstar Wizkid from the streets of Lagos to global acclaim. The documentary, directed by Karam Gill and executive produced by Bill Simmons, is scheduled to debut on December 11 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will also be available for streaming on Max.

The film traces Wizkid’s evolution from a young talent making music in Surulere, Lagos, to headlining London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2023, marking him as the first African artist to achieve such a milestone. Featuring exclusive footage and interviews, the documentary highlights his career alongside the worldwide rise of Afrobeats.

Renowned music icons and cultural figures, including Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, describe Wizkid as a beacon of hope and a symbol of artistic innovation for Nigeria. The documentary also examines his self-made success, the cultural connection between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and how his achievements have propelled Afrobeats to become a global musical phenomenon.

With Music Box: Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, HBO promises not only a celebration of Wizkid’s career but also a lens into the cultural impact of Nigeria’s vibrant music scene.
