Northern Elders, Stakeholders Move to Form United Political Front Ahead of 2027 Election

Key northern political stakeholders are making strategic moves to unite the region ahead of the 2027 general election. The initiative, driven by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and the National Political Consultative Group (NPCG), includes plans to convene a Northern Unity Summit in early 2026.

The proposed summit is expected to bring together traditional rulers, religious leaders, political office holders, youth representatives and influential voices across the 19 northern states. The objective is to foster a renewed sense of political solidarity and cooperation, similar to the leadership approach associated with the late Premier of the Northern Region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, known for championing regional unity and collective progress.

Speaking during an expanded NPCG meeting in Abuja on Saturday, the Director General of the Northern Elders Forum, Prof. Doknan Sheni, emphasized that the first step in rebuilding the region’s political relevance is addressing the causes of internal division.
