Party Registration Shake-Up: INEC Disqualifies Six More Political Groups Over Irregularities

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disqualified six additional political associations seeking registration as political parties in Nigeria. This move comes as part of INEC’s continuous effort to ensure that only credible and law-abiding organisations participate in the country’s democratic process.

According to INEC’s statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the affected groups failed to meet key constitutional and statutory requirements outlined in Section 225 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022. The disqualified associations reportedly fell short in areas including submission of verifiable membership registers, proper administrative structure across the federation, and compliance with financial disclosure obligations.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, emphasised that the Commission remains committed to sanitising the political space. He explained that while political pluralism is vital to democracy, it must not become a channel for abuse, corruption, or unserious participation.

Yakubu added that several other associations are still undergoing screening and verification, assuring that only those meeting the legal standards would be granted full registration status. With this development, the number of pending applications for party registration has now dropped to 22.

Political analysts have commended INEC for its firm stance, noting that the decision will help curb the proliferation of weak political parties and strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
