16 Nigerian Military Officers Arrested Over Alleged Coup Plot to Oust President Tinubu
At least sixteen senior officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces have reportedly been arrested over an alleged plan to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration, according to top security sources.
Although military authorities claimed the arrests were due to “disciplinary issues,” including “failure in promotion examinations” and “breach of service regulations,” insiders disclosed that the detained officers are being investigated for plotting a coup d’état.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said the move was part of a “routine military exercise.” But sources within Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) revealed that intelligence reports exposed a plan led by a Brigadier General to seize control of government, accusing “selfish politicians” of destroying the nation’s integrity.
The suspects, said to include Captains and senior field commanders, were picked up across different military zones. Authorities reportedly cancelled the October 1 Independence Day parade after discovering that the alleged conspirators intended to execute their plan during the ceremony, targeting the President and key government officials.
The detained officers are now held at the DIA headquarters in Abuja pending further investigation.
Nigeria has experienced five successful coups since independence in 1960. Recent concerns over corruption, poor welfare, and dwindling trust between the military and political class have heightened unease within the ranks.
