Nigeria TV Info — Nationwide Protests Erupt Over Rising Cost of Living, Poverty
Abuja, Nigeria — Scores of Nigerians poured into the streets of Abuja and several cities across the country on Friday to protest the surging cost of living and worsening poverty, demanding urgent government action to address what they described as “social and institutional poverty.”
The protest, tagged a “Call to Action”, was held simultaneously in Lagos, Yola, Yobe, Nasarawa, and other states, reflecting widespread discontent with the current economic realities.
In Abuja, the peaceful demonstration began at the Labour House, where protesters, carrying placards with bold messages, marched through major streets to the Federal Ministry of Finance before returning to their starting point.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards read:
“Our pots are empty because the system is broken!”
“President Tinubu, we cannot eat promises! Feed us with justice and good governance!”
“Empty Pots, Empty Promises! We can’t cook hope!”
“We march not just for food but for justice, dignity, and equality!”
“When the cost of food rises faster than wages, hunger becomes a national emergency!”
Others read:
“139 million Nigerians in poverty and counting, Enough is Enough!”
“Three out of four rural dwellers now live below the poverty line!”
“Release funds for agriculture now! Our farms can’t survive on speeches!”
“We refuse to normalise poverty in a nation this rich!”
Speaking during the protest, organisers said their movement represents the voice of millions of Nigerians who continue to struggle under the weight of economic hardship, food inflation, and declining living standards.
They emphasised that despite increased government revenues, there has been no corresponding improvement in the lives of ordinary citizens, urging authorities to ensure that economic policies translate into tangible relief for the poor.
> “More money is flowing into government coffers, but Nigerians are getting poorer,” one of the protesters lamented. “There must be a transformation in the lives of over 100 million citizens living in abject poverty.”
The protesters vowed to sustain their peaceful demonstrations until meaningful action is taken to tackle hunger, unemployment, and systemic inequality in the country.
