Nigeria TV Info — Spotify Partners with Global Record Labels to Develop “Responsible” AI Tools for Music Industry

Spotify has announced a major collaboration with the world’s biggest record labels to create “responsible” artificial intelligence (AI) tools that will support, not replace, human creativity in music.

The streaming giant revealed that it is working with Sony Music, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, music rights agency Merlin, and digital label Believe to ensure that artists and songwriters are fairly credited and compensated as AI continues to reshape the global music industry.

According to Spotify, the partnership aims to build AI technologies that “put artists and songwriters first” while maintaining respect for copyright laws. The company emphasized that all developments will be done under upfront licensing agreements, stating clearly that it will not “ask for forgiveness later.”

> “Technology should always serve artists, not the other way around,” said Alex Norström, Spotify’s Co-President.

Although Spotify has not disclosed what these new AI tools will look like, it confirmed that artists will be given the choice to opt in or out of AI-assisted projects. The platform also recognized that there are “wide-ranging opinions” across the music community on the role of generative AI.

The move comes amid growing criticism from global stars such as Dua Lipa, Sir Elton John, and Sir Paul McCartney, who have accused AI companies of using their songs without consent or payment.

Spotify itself has faced similar backlash for hosting AI-generated songs while taking down content that uses cloned voices or impersonates real artists — including a viral 2023 track that mimicked Drake and The Weeknd.

With this new alliance, Spotify appears to be positioning itself as a leader in shaping ethical AI use in the music world — aiming to balance technological innovation with the protection of artistic integrity.
