Prevent Demolition of Igbo Houses in Lagos, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Tells Tinubu
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and halt the ongoing demolition of properties allegedly owned by Igbo residents in Lagos State. Kalu, who made the call during a press briefing in Abuja, described the demolition exercise as âunfair and injuriousâ to national unity and peaceful coexistence.
He emphasized that while the enforcement of urban development laws is necessary, such actions must be carried out with fairness and transparency, avoiding any ethnic bias. Kalu further noted that reports reaching his office indicated that many of the affected property owners had genuine documents and approvals from relevant Lagos authorities.
The Deputy Speaker urged the Lagos State Government to review its demolition policy and explore alternative means of urban renewal without rendering citizens homeless. He also called for a committee to investigate the exercise and ensure compensation for legitimate property owners.
Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to promoting unity, equity, and peaceful coexistence among Nigeriaâs ethnic groups, urging leaders to act with justice and empathy in all matters affecting citizens.
