Harare, Zimbabwe — Robert Mugabe Jr., the 33-year-old son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe, has been arrested in Harare on allegations of possessing illegal drugs.

According to local media outlet ZimLive, police detained Mugabe Jr. on Wednesday after allegedly discovering cannabis and cocaine in his possession. He was brought to the Harare Magistrates Court where he is expected to face formal charges related to drug offences.

This is not Mugabe Jr.’s first run-in with the law. In 2023, he was arrested following a dispute at a party where he was accused of vandalizing property and assaulting a police officer. Prosecutors at the time alleged he smashed car windscreens and spat on an officer, with damages estimated at about $12,000. Mugabe Jr. denied those charges and pursued an out-of-court settlement with the complainant.

The son of Robert Mugabe and Grace Mugabe has often attracted public scrutiny in Zimbabwe, where his father ruled for nearly four decades before being ousted in 2017. The elder Mugabe, who passed away in 2019 at age 95, remains a polarizing figure — remembered as a liberation hero by some, but criticized internationally for alleged human rights abuses and policies that contributed to Zimbabwe’s economic decline.

Mugabe Jr.’s arrest comes as Zimbabwean authorities intensify efforts to combat drug abuse in urban centres, a growing concern among young people in the country.
