Teen Shooter of Colombian Presidential Candidate Sentenced to 7 Years

BOGOTÁ — The 15-year-old gunman responsible for the fatal attack on Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe has been sentenced to seven years in juvenile detention, prosecutors announced on Wednesday.

Uribe, a right-wing politician, was shot in the head during a campaign rally in Bogotá in June and later died in August from his injuries.

According to prosecutors, the teenager “must remain in a specialized care center for seven years, deprived of liberty,” under Colombia’s juvenile justice system.

The shocking assassination has intensified debates over political violence and security in Colombia ahead of the country’s upcoming elections.
