Kaduna-Abuja Train Derails, Multiple Cabins Overturn
ABUJA — A passenger train traveling on the busy Kaduna-Abuja route derailed on Tuesday morning, leaving several cabins overturned and sparking panic among passengers.
Eyewitnesses described the aftermath as chaotic, with many scrambling for safety after the incident. The exact cause of the derailment is yet to be confirmed, and it remains unclear whether any casualties were recorded.
This latest disruption adds to the troubled history of the Kaduna–Abuja rail line, which has witnessed several incidents in recent years, including the deadly armed attack in March 2022.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding Tuesday's derailment.
The incident comes just a week after the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) reported another fault on the same corridor, when one of the train's coach wheels developed a hot axle near Rigasa Station in Kaduna. The NRC explained that the fault, caused by excessive heat, was quickly contained, and the train was returned safely to Kaduna.
At the time, the corporation warned of temporary capacity constraints, particularly for business class passengers, and issued an apology for the inconvenience.
