PDP, NNPP, ADC Reject Proposed Salary Hike for Politicians Amid Economic Hardship

Abuja — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC) have collectively condemned the proposed salary increase for political office holders, describing it as “insensitive,” “tone-deaf,” and “ill-timed” given Nigeria’s deteriorating economic conditions.

The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) recently disclosed plans to review the salaries of the President, Vice President, ministers, governors, and other senior officials. The commission cited that the current pay structure, last adjusted in 2008, is outdated and in need of revision.

However, opposition parties argue that the proposed hike reflects greed and a disturbing disconnect from the struggles of ordinary Nigerians, many of whom are grappling with rising hunger, soaring inflation, and a declining minimum wage of ₦70,000.

The parties have called on the government to prioritize the welfare of citizens rather than increasing the pay of top officials, warning that approving such a move at this time could deepen public discontent.

This development adds to growing debates around government spending and the need for policies that reflect the economic realities of Nigerians.
