The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, has assured the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of the Ministry’s full support for its ongoing fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
Kyari gave the assurance while responding to remarks by the NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, who led members of the Agency’s management team to a meeting with the minister and top officials of the ministry in Abuja.
The minister commended the efforts of the NDLEA in safeguarding communities and emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between the agriculture sector and the nation’s anti-drug agency.
He noted that drug abuse not only poses a threat to public health and security, but also undermines agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods.
Marwa, on his part, highlighted the agency’s ongoing interventions and appealed for closer partnership with the ministry in the area of public sensitisation, alternative livelihood programmes and the rehabilitation of drug users.
Both sides agreed to strengthen institutional cooperation and develop joint programmes aimed at addressing drug challenges, particularly at the grassroots level.
The meeting also explored opportunities for integrating anti-drug campaigns into agricultural extension services and community-based empowerment initiatives.
