As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) intensifies preparations for the upcoming by-elections scheduled to hold on August 16, 2025, in Edo and Kaduna states, opposition political parties and election observer groups have called for a transparent and credible electoral process.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, the opposition parties urged INEC to ensure a level playing field for all political actors and stakeholders involved in the exercise. They specifically appealed to the electoral body to remain neutral and diligent in the discharge of its duties so as to safeguard the integrity of the polls.

The parties also called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support all efforts geared towards upholding democratic principles during the elections. According to them, the cooperation of the ruling party will promote public confidence in the process and help discourage acts capable of undermining the sanctity of the ballot.

Expressing concern over incidents recorded in past elections, the group of political parties and election observers stressed the need for electoral officials and security personnel to conduct themselves professionally and independently.

They emphasized that voters and party agents must be granted unhindered access to polling units and collation centers to help foster trust in the system. The groups further encouraged eligible voters in Edo and Kaduna to turn out in large numbers, assuring them that their active participation is key to strengthening democracy in the country.

INEC has, in recent weeks, stepped up its engagements with stakeholders in both states, pledging to deliver free, fair, and credible by-elections.
