European Powers Warn UN of Possible Iran Sanctions Reimposition
Britain, France, and Germany have formally notified the United Nations of their readiness to reimpose UN-mandated sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme if a diplomatic resolution is not reached by the end of August.
According to a joint letter obtained by AFP, the three European powers, collectively known as the E3, wrote to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council stating they are “committed to use all diplomatic tools at our disposal to ensure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon.”
The E3 warned that unless Tehran complies and meets the set deadline, they are prepared to trigger the “snapback mechanism” — a provision from the 2015 international nuclear deal with Iran that allowed for the easing of UN Security Council sanctions in exchange for compliance with nuclear restrictions.
The move signals rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the dwindling window for diplomatic negotiations.
