In southern China’s Guangdong province, particularly in Foshan, the country’s largest-ever chikungunya outbreak is underway. Over 7,000 cases have been confirmed in recent weeks, prompting COVID-like measures including hospital isolation, drone surveillance, mosquito eradication, and fines for non-compliance.<br>
Chikungunya is spread by mosquitoes, not from person to person, but causes severe fever, joint pain, muscle aches, and rashes. Both the WHO and the US CDC have issued warnings, with the CDC raising Guangdong to a Level 2 travel alert. Nigeria can learn from these responses to strengthen mosquito control and public health readiness.
