NBA Slams Ibom Air Over ‘Reckless’ Treatment, Lifetime Ban on Passenger
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned Ibom Air for what it described as the “reckless and unjust” treatment of one of its members, who was recently placed on a lifetime flight ban by the airline.
In a statement issued on Monday, the NBA accused the airline of high-handedness and failing to follow due process before imposing the ban. The association argued that the decision violated the passenger’s fundamental rights, adding that such actions, if unchecked, could set a dangerous precedent in the aviation sector.
NBA President Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) called on Ibom Air to immediately reverse the ban and issue a public apology to the affected passenger. He warned that the association would take legal action if the matter was not resolved promptly.
“The NBA will not stand by while any of its members, or indeed any Nigerian, is subjected to arbitrary and oppressive treatment by service providers,” Maikyau said.
Ibom Air had announced the lifetime ban last week, citing unruly behaviour by the passenger during a flight. However, the NBA insists the incident was misrepresented and has demanded an independent investigation into the matter.
The controversy has sparked nationwide debate on the limits of airline authority, passenger rights, and the need for fair dispute resolution in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
