System Failure Blamed for Poor 2025 WASSCE Results – Parents, Teachers, Students

Nigeria TV Info, August 5, 2025 – Following the release of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates on Monday, July 5, concerned stakeholders across Nigeria have expressed deep concern over the disappointing performance recorded nationwide.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), which oversees the conduct of the annual exams, announced the results earlier this month. However, reactions have since poured in from parents, teachers, student unions, and education experts, all pointing to what they describe as “system failure” as the root cause of the poor performance.

According to them, persistent issues such as underfunded schools, lack of adequate teaching materials, poorly motivated teachers, unstable academic calendars, and an over-reliance on exam malpractice have continued to undermine the quality of education in the country.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), speaking on behalf of students in higher institutions, said the WASSCE outcome reflects a long-standing neglect of the basic education sector. “The poor performance is not the fault of the students alone. It is a systemic problem that begins with policies, school infrastructure, and the quality of instruction,” NANS stated.

Some parents lamented that despite personal efforts to support their children’s learning, the environment in which students are taught is often not conducive to proper academic development. Teachers' unions have also echoed this sentiment, calling on government at all levels to prioritize investment in education.

Education analysts say the latest results should serve as a wake-up call for policymakers to urgently review the curriculum, improve teacher training, and strengthen monitoring and evaluation in the school system.

As the debate continues, many hope that this year’s WASSCE outcome will lead to meaningful reforms in Nigeria’s education sector.
