Human rights advocate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently review the decision to remove fuel subsidy, citing the deepening hardship and growing poverty levels among Nigerians.
Falana expressed concern that the removal of subsidy, implemented without adequate cushioning measures, has worsened the living conditions of millions of citizens, particularly those in vulnerable communities. He warned that the current economic situation is unsustainable and could lead to further social unrest if left unaddressed.
“The government must not turn a blind eye to the reality on the ground. Many Nigerians can no longer afford basic necessities. This policy needs a serious review,” Falana stated.
He urged the Tinubu administration to consider more people-centered economic strategies that prioritize the welfare of citizens while addressing fiscal challenges.
The call comes amid increasing public outcry over rising food prices, transportation costs, and declining purchasing power since the subsidy was removed in 2023.
