A Coalition of Green Non-Governmental Organisations (CGNGOs) has officially launched a bold and far-reaching environmental restoration campaign in Rivers State, Nigeria. The programme, known as the Eco-Citizen Ogoni Initiative (ECOI), was unveiled in Port Harcourt on Saturday, in commemoration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem 2025.

This landmark initiative is aimed at restoring the severely degraded mangrove forests across the four local government areas of Ogoni. As part of its ambitious goal, the coalition has committed to planting 560 million mangrove trees in the region by the year 2035.

Speaking at the event, Pastor Nature Dumale, the Ogoni Coordinator of the coalition, revealed that the project is not only about reforestation, but also about empowering people. He stated that 560,000 eco-citizens will be trained and equipped through the initiative to lead a new wave of sustainable environmental change and resilience in the region.

This strategic intervention by CGNGOs represents one of the largest ecological revival efforts ever undertaken in Nigeria’s Niger Delta and is expected to significantly contribute to climate action, biodiversity recovery, and green job creation in the area.
