2027 Candidates: Fresh Crisis Rocks Political Parties as INEC Portal Opens

Fresh political tensions have emerged across several Nigerian political parties following the opening of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal for the submission of candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development has intensified internal leadership disputes, with rival factions in some parties laying claim to the authority to upload candidates' names to the INEC portal. The situation is particularly pronounced within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where competing factions continue to battle for recognition and control of the nomination process.

INEC confirmed that political parties began receiving access codes for candidate uploads from June 26 and reiterated that it would only recognize party executives affirmed by valid court judgments. The commission stressed that compliance with its timetable and legal procedures remains mandatory for all political parties.

Officials of the INEC-recognized PDP leadership disclosed that the party had already commenced uploading the names of its candidates, while members of the rival faction insisted that ongoing legal battles would ultimately determine the legitimate leadership before the submission deadline.

Similar nomination activities are underway in other political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), as aspirants race to complete documentation before the closing date.

Political analysts warn that unresolved internal crises and multiple court cases could threaten the smooth conduct of party nominations and potentially affect preparations for the 2027 general elections if not resolved promptly.
