Obi, Kwankwaso Lead NDC's Fight Against Deregistration
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified efforts to overturn a court ruling that nullified its registration, with the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, taking leading roles in the legal and political campaign.
Following an emergency strategy meeting in Abuja, the party announced that it would challenge the judgment through an appeal, insisting that the ruling would not derail its preparations for the 2027 general elections. Party leaders, including Seriake Dickson and members of the National Working Committee, expressed confidence that the appellate court would restore the party's legal status.
Kwankwaso, after meeting with Dickson, described the setback as temporary and urged party supporters to remain united. Obi also assured members that the legal team was already reviewing the judgment and would pursue every constitutional avenue to defend the party's recognition.
The controversy follows a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that reversed an earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC. The decision has sparked reactions across Nigeria's political landscape, with opposition figures arguing that the matter should be resolved through the judicial process to safeguard democratic participation ahead of the 2027 elections.
