Nigeria TV Info Uzodimma Lauds Tinubu, National Assembly Over State Police Bill

The Governor of Hope Uzodimma has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly of Nigeria for advancing the State Police Bill, describing it as a bold constitutional reform capable of strengthening security across the country.

Uzodimma, who also chairs the Progressive Governors' Forum, said decentralising policing would enable state governments to complement federal security agencies through improved intelligence gathering, community engagement, and quicker responses to security threats. He noted that officers familiar with local languages, culture, and terrain would be better positioned to tackle crime and protect lives and property.

The governor argued that the proposed state police structure would not only enhance public safety but also create a more secure environment for businesses, attract investment, and stimulate economic growth. He described the bill as a significant step toward addressing Nigeria's evolving security challenges and praised the collaboration between the executive and legislature in pushing the reform forward.

The State Police Bill recently passed the Senate as part of a constitutional amendment process. However, before it can become law, it must secure approval from at least two-thirds of Nigeria's state Houses of Assembly before being transmitted for presidential assent. Supporters believe the reform will improve local policing, while critics have raised concerns about possible political misuse of state-controlled police forces.
