2027: Setback for Obi/Kwankwaso Ticket as Court Reverses Initial Order on NDC Registration

The political ambitions of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections have suffered a significant setback after a Federal High Court in Lokoja reversed its earlier judgment that had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the party.

The latest ruling effectively nullifies the previous court order that recognised the NDC, throwing the legal status of the party into uncertainty. The decision also raises questions about the eligibility of candidates seeking to contest elections under the NDC platform, including the widely discussed presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The court's decision means that unless overturned on appeal, the NDC may no longer enjoy the legal recognition required to sponsor candidates for future elections. Political analysts believe the ruling could complicate the opposition's preparations for the 2027 polls.

Reacting to the judgment, NDC officials rejected claims that the party had been deregistered, insisting that the ruling merely set aside an earlier registration order. The party announced plans to immediately appeal the decision, expressing confidence that the Court of Appeal would restore its legal status.
