At least 32 people have been confirmed dead and more than 700 injured after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela within a minute of each other, triggering widespread destruction across the country. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, hit near the coastal town of MorĂłn, about 168 kilometers west of the capital, Caracas, on Wednesday evening.

Authorities declared a national state of emergency as rescue teams searched through collapsed buildings in Caracas, La Guaira, Carabobo, Miranda, and other affected regions. Several residential and commercial structures crumbled, trapping residents under rubble, while power outages and communication disruptions complicated emergency operations.

Acting President Delcy RodrĂguez said the death toll could rise as rescuers continue to reach devastated communities and search for missing persons. More than 20 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quakes, forcing thousands of residents to spend the night outdoors amid fears of further seismic activity.

The U.S. Geological Survey described the disaster as one with a high probability of significant casualties and extensive damage. Venezuela's main international airport and parts of the public transportation network were temporarily shut down due to structural concerns, while schools in affected areas have been closed.

International aid and rescue teams from several countries have begun mobilizing to support Venezuela's emergency response efforts as authorities assess the full scale of the catastrophe.
