FG to Evacuate Over 742 Nigerians in South Africa Before June 30

The Federal Government has announced plans to evacuate more than 742 Nigerian citizens from South Africa ahead of a June 30 deadline linked to rising xenophobic tensions and threats against foreign nationals in parts of the country.

According to officials, the evacuation is part of ongoing emergency repatriation efforts coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), following renewed attacks and insecurity affecting Nigerians and other African migrants.

Authorities disclosed that over 1,000 Nigerians had initially registered for voluntary return from South Africa, with screening and documentation already concluded for a large number of applicants. The first batch of evacuees has already been successfully airlifted and received in Lagos, while further flights are being arranged to bring back the remaining citizens before the deadline.

Officials explained that the evacuation is being carried out in phases using approved chartered flights, with priority given to vulnerable persons, including women, children, and individuals exposed to immediate risk.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad, stressing that diplomatic engagement with South African authorities is ongoing to prevent further escalation and protect remaining Nigerian residents.

Meanwhile, concerns continue to rise over xenophobic attacks and an alleged ultimatum issued in some communities requiring foreign nationals to leave before June 30, prompting urgent intervention by Nigerian authorities.
