Deputy Speaker, Senator Rally Support for State Police, Security Reforms

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and a prominent senator have renewed calls for the establishment of state police and comprehensive security reforms to tackle Nigeria's growing security challenges.

Speaking at separate engagements on national security, the lawmakers argued that the current centralized policing structure is overstretched and unable to effectively respond to the diverse security threats facing different parts of the country. They maintained that creating state police would enable sub-national governments to respond more quickly and efficiently to local security concerns.

The lawmakers also advocated broader reforms in the security architecture, including improved intelligence gathering, enhanced collaboration among security agencies, increased funding for law enforcement, and stronger community policing initiatives.

According to them, insecurity—including banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and communal conflicts—has continued to threaten economic activities and the wellbeing of citizens, making urgent reforms necessary.

They urged the National Assembly, state governments, and other stakeholders to work together in developing a legal and operational framework that would prevent abuse while ensuring accountability in any state policing system.

The renewed advocacy comes amid ongoing national debates over constitutional amendments and strategies to strengthen Nigeria's security framework and protect lives and property across the country.
