Why I Appointed Wike as FCT Minister – Tinubu Reveals

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has explained the rationale behind his decision to appoint former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stating that the choice was driven by competence, performance history, and the need for decisive leadership in Abuja’s administration.

Speaking on the appointment, Tinubu said the FCT requires a manager with strong political will, administrative experience, and the ability to take difficult decisions without delay. He noted that Wike’s record as a former governor demonstrated firmness in governance, aggressive infrastructure delivery, and capacity to enforce policy implementation.

The President added that the FCT is not a ceremonial office but a critical national assignment requiring someone who can “get things done,” especially in areas such as urban renewal, land administration reforms, revenue generation, and infrastructure development.

Since assuming office, Wike has introduced several reforms in Abuja, including stricter enforcement of development regulations, review of land allocations, and accelerated road construction projects. His approach has generated both praise and criticism, particularly among political observers and residents affected by ongoing demolitions and urban restructuring.

Tinubu maintained that governance requires tough choices, insisting that the administration will continue prioritizing results over sentiment in key appointments.
