Terrorists’ Den: 360 Freed Borno Captives Recount Starvation, Deaths
Survivors of a harrowing captivity in terrorist hideouts in Nigeria’s northeast have begun sharing chilling accounts of starvation, disease, and repeated deaths among fellow abductees after 360 people were recently rescued by security forces in Borno State.
The freed captives, including women and children, described years of brutal conditions marked by extreme hunger, lack of medical care, and constant movement between forest camps controlled by armed groups. Many said they were forced to survive on leaves, contaminated water, and occasional scraps of food.
Some survivors recounted witnessing fellow hostages die from untreated illnesses and exhaustion, with bodies often left behind during forced relocations. Others reported being used as human shields during clashes between militants and security operatives.
Security sources confirmed that the rescue operation was carried out after sustained military pressure on insurgent enclaves across remote forest areas. The freed victims have since been moved to safe locations for medical evaluation, psychological support, and family tracing.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to dismantle remaining terror cells operating in the region, as well as to reunite survivors with their families. Humanitarian agencies are also being mobilized to assist in recovery and reintegration.
Officials described the rescue as one of the largest single recoveries of abducted civilians in recent months, highlighting both progress and the continuing humanitarian crisis in the region.
