Senate Moves to Fast-Track Creation of State Police Amid Rising Terror Attacks

The Nigerian Senate has indicated plans to fast-track legislative processes aimed at establishing state police, following a surge in terror attacks and worsening insecurity across several regions of the country.

Lawmakers say the move has become urgent due to increasing incidents of banditry, kidnappings, and coordinated attacks that have overwhelmed federal policing structures. According to senators, decentralizing policing powers to state governments could enhance rapid response, improve intelligence gathering, and strengthen local security architecture.

The proposal for state police has long been a contentious constitutional issue in Nigeria, with supporters arguing it will bring security closer to the people, while critics warn it could be abused by state executives without strong oversight mechanisms.

Senators noted that recent attacks in parts of the North and other flashpoints have intensified public demand for reform, pushing the National Assembly to prioritize the bill for accelerated debate and possible constitutional amendment.

If passed, the reform is expected to significantly reshape Nigeria’s policing system, shifting from a fully centralized structure to a more federalized security model involving state-controlled police units operating alongside federal agencies.
