Nigeria TV Info Senate Moves Against Rising School Kidnappings After Oyo Horror Attack

The Nigerian Senate has launched urgent legislative and security measures following the shocking abduction of dozens of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of teachers and a pupil, has reignited national concerns over the safety of schools and the growing threat of mass kidnappings across the country.

During plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on Nigeria’s future and collective humanity. The Senate observed a minute of silence for the victims and called for intensified efforts by security agencies to secure the release of those still in captivity.

Lawmakers also renewed calls for stronger security reforms, including the establishment of state police and the full implementation of a national Safe Schools Security Framework aimed at protecting educational institutions from criminal attacks. Members of the House of Representatives joined the push, urging the Federal Government to strengthen intelligence gathering, rapid-response operations, and community-based security systems.

The Oyo tragedy has sparked nationwide protests by teachers, labour unions, students, and civil society groups demanding the immediate rescue of abducted victims and better protection for schools. Demonstrations were reported in several states, with protesters warning that continued insecurity threatens the future of education in Nigeria.

Political leaders, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, have urged Nigerians to unite against insecurity rather than politicize the tragedy. Authorities say rescue efforts are ongoing, while the Senate has vowed to continue oversight of security agencies until the abducted students and teachers are safely returned.
