Cooking Gas Prices Surge Despite Higher Domestic Supply
Cooking gas (LPG) prices across Nigeria have continued to rise sharply, even as industry reports indicate improved domestic supply from local refineries and gas processing plants. Consumers in major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt are now paying significantly more per kilogram, worsening cost-of-living pressures.
Marketers attribute the increase to a mix of foreign exchange volatility, high transportation costs, and distribution bottlenecks rather than outright shortage. Although domestic production has improved due to expanded gas output from local operators, stakeholders say the gains are not yet translating into stable retail prices.
Energy analysts note that depot prices have remained unstable, forcing retailers to adjust pump prices frequently. Some dealers also blame high logistics costs, including trucking and storage inefficiencies, for the persistent surge.
Households are increasingly turning to alternative cooking fuels such as kerosene and charcoal, raising concerns about health and environmental impacts. Industry players are urging government intervention to stabilize pricing, improve infrastructure, and ensure that domestic gas supply benefits end-users directly.
