Rainbow Coalition Will Choose Rivers Governorship Candidate for 2027 — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the governorship candidate for Rivers State in the 2027 elections will be jointly selected by the political parties operating under the “Rainbow Coalition.”

Speaking during a luncheon for coalition candidates in Port Harcourt, Wike dismissed reports suggesting that any individual had already secured the coalition’s endorsement for the governorship race. He stated that no final decision had been made regarding who would succeed Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

According to Wike, the coalition consists of members from the Peoples Democratic Party, All Progressives Congress, Labour Party, and Action Alliance. He emphasized that the alliance has only agreed on one major political position so far — support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Wike described the Rainbow Coalition as the dominant political force in Rivers State and urged politicians seeking elective positions, including governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, state assembly, and local government offices, to align with the coalition if they hope to remain politically relevant.

He also warned aspirants against premature celebrations and claims of endorsement, stressing that the coalition would eventually determine its consensus governorship candidate through consultation and collective agreement among member parties. Wike said the coalition was created to promote unity, political stability, and development in Rivers State while reducing divisions that have shaped the state's politics in recent years.

The statement comes as political activities continue to intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with several parties already positioning themselves for key contests across the country.
